Review - Heatherbrae Pies (and more)

One of the things I hate about road trips is usually the lack of decent food options, particularly on the main highways of this country. We had to take a trip to see the partner's parentals in Tinonee (near Taree) and the faced the usual dilemmas - what to eat on the way, and where to eat in Taree? We were lured by this beached boat, just after the bridge at Hexham.

A Prawn Roll ($6) was our reward, bursting with crustaceans, crisp iceberg lettuce and seafood sauce, and it was good!

We often remark on the signage for Heatherbrae Pies which litters the highway, but up until now we'd never been lured in to this pie shop that looks like a franchise (the reason we'd failed to try them so far).

Again we were surprised - the Jillaroo turned out to be a half decent pie - great pastry, large lumps of steak in a rich pinkish sauce with cheese.

A detour from the highway toward Forster gave us a great view of the waterways, and a nice Iced Coffee ($4.50) complete with Tiny Teddies at the Boatshed Cafe.

A quick left at Nabiac took us 11km off the road to the pretty views at the Villa D'Esta Winery - Hungarian run, and very generous with the tasting pours... *hic*

We decided on a varietal I hadn't tried before - Chambourcin ($15); and some tasty products produced on site - Pickled Pears ($5) which we later intend to try with pork; and some Blackberry Jam ($4).

On the way home, another stop at the beached boat gave us a kilo of Newcastle Prawns ($25/kg) that we enjoyed when we arrived home with some vegetables we procured in Forster.

We also found a reasonable restaurant to take the parentals to in Taree - but that's another story entirely...
