Temptingly cheap seafood opposite a sandy harbour beach is quite a draw card, particularly in a locale like Rose Bay, better known for higher prices.
Revel in the fresh sea breeze shaded by an umbrella at an al fresco table while you choose from a reasonable menu supplemented with a good list of specials.
To start, you could do much worse than a dozen natural Oysters ($21) delivered fresh from a Hawkesbury wholesaler. Sure the presentation is more RSL Club than haute cuisine, and I am not convinced that the seafood sauce is a great match for oysters, unless of course you don't want to taste the briny goodness of the oysters, but that said, they're good oysters for a good price.
The BBQ Seafood ($27) is a heaving plate of seafood that eliminates the need for an entree by placing natural oysters, fresh prawns, barbequed prawns, calamari, octopus and plump, well cooked mussels with a salmon fillet, chips and a bowl of side salad – most would struggle to finish it. A side sauce or two wouldn't have gone astray here, but if you're looking at value, this really is good on that scale.
The salad is fresh if not particularly inspired. Team some excellent paddock produce with the fruits of the sea in the Garlic Surf and Turf ($23) which gets you a lovely steak with garlic prawns and your choice of chips and salad, or vegetables and mash.
Wrap things up with a credible Crème Brûlée ($7.50) dished up with ice cream and chocolate dipped strawberries, at a rather incredible price. Speaking of cheap, so is the wine, with bottles ranging from a staggering $13.50 up to $26.00. There's nothing incredible on the list, but the Peter Lehmann Chardonnay ($23) we tried was infinitely drinkable, and acidic enough to match the seafood well.
My own fears about parking on a Sunday proved unfounded, with free two hour spaces available right out the front. Work off any excess calories by hiring a kayak on the beach! The hirer has a very cute and friendly Pomeranian in the crate under the sign.
