Review - Firefly

You can blame the moody Amsterdam lighting on Sydney's current spell of awful weather. Ignore that and focus on the bobbing yachts, purring BMWs, and illicit opportunities to peer into the windows of the rich down at the snazzy Walsh Bay.

We're down here to dine at Firefly which is a cute little tapas and wine bar overlooking the water, ideally placed for those attending Sydney Theatre.

My resounding thought while dining here was why haven’t I had a Coconut Mojito ($15.50) before? Sipping one of Warren Ford’s tall, soothing splashes of Sydney summer in this location on a warm day would be great. On this particular day my little mug of The Firefly Sangria ($15.50) goes down a little easier.

The tapas style of eating suits either a fast pre-theatre meal or a long catch-up where you make plentiful selections from the reasonable list of by-the-glass wines. The 2007 Whitehaven Pinot Gris ($8/glass, $55/bottle) was my standout. The best thing I put in my mouth was the Woodbridge Smoked Trout ($19) with crème fraiche, salmon roe and lovely golden, salted ciabatta. Far from being a delicate taste, this trout actually needed the calming crème fraiche - quite a party in your mouth. Their basil leaves were lovely and fresh too.

The lean Lamb, Pork and Garlic Meatballs ($14.50) were also good.

The  Duck and Shallot Pancakes ($17.50) came nicely plated on a black tile, and helped round out any corners. They weren't bad, but nor were they anything to write home about.

A filling rustic pizza of Jamon, Mushrooms and Taleggio ($18) was a good use for the finely diced field mushrooms, but it didn’t quite live up to my imagination inspired by these bold ingredients.

Our waitress correctly suggested two plates per person as a good basis for a meal, but with the addition of  a more filling pizza, we had a few slices left over, and no room for dessert.

Night has fallen, our wine is drunk, so we escape into the cool night air. By the way parking is at a premium down here (you need to take change) but it’s a scenic walk through quite epic arches back to your car. Plenty of interesting things to sticky beak at too, with lots of opportunities to get a look at how the other half 'make do' in these trying economic times.

Fatty Foods Gone Overboard

This is The Double Bacon Hamburger Fatty Melt

Three bacon-stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches for buns, cheese, bacon and two four-ounce beefs patties.

This is possibly a sign that someone loves the centre of Oreos too much, and has too much time on their hands?

This one would have perplexed me up until yesterday:

It's apparently a pizza with a hot dog wrapped in bacon pigs in a blanket crust. The center is filled with italian sausage, ham, bacon, bacon bits, sliced tomato, mushroom, onion, peppers, garlic chips, basil, black pepper and tomato sauce. It can also be flavored with maple syrup and ketchup.

Yesterday a well known pizza manufacturer who shall not be named for fear of advertising their not-food sent a pamphlet about "pasta" dishes, encased in puff pastry bowls. They looked so horrific I had to keep the pamphlet to show my significant other and share the horror!
