What’s this - a pocket of Newtown springing up in trendy Bondi?
It’s easy to sink into this laid-back, homely cafe that looks and feels like a lounge room.
Maybe it’s because your Nanna’s got those chairs; or your Mum’s using the same crockery?
Whatever it is, it makes a bowl of Homemade Baked Beans with Bacon and Maple Syrup ($5) taste mighty comforting.
Menu items are mostly pre-prepared; a Sweet Chilli Chicken Burger ($8) benefits from good home-made coriander pesto and a great patty, but the Brasserie Bread roll would shine if they assembled them when ordered.
The same goes for the Lamb Kofta Burger ($8) with minted yoghurt, hummus, rocket and sun-dried tomatoes.
“But who cares about savoury food when there are cakes to be eaten.” Andria Bingham has a point, and she can really bake. She aims for “cakes like Nanna used to make” but she easily surpasses mine with her gorgeous Raspberry Flan ($6). Cute Red Velvet Cupcakes ($3.50) are a sinful surprise, and well complimented by a cup of Morgan’s Handcrafted Coffee ($3.30/reg, $3.80/lg).
A moist slice of Carrot Cake ($6) goes down a treat with a Stolen Recipe Iced Tea ($3.50). It’s nice to see a cafe supporting the local community’s musicians and artists with an egalitarian system: “Anyone who wants to have a go puts their name in our diary.” Are you the next big thing?
