Intrepid Bondi bar hunter, Alex Harmon, has scoped out another one...
With cosy wood furnishings, this stylish Bondi diner is more hunters’ retreat than homage to Hunter S. Thompson.
Everything on the menu is meticulously planned, so much so, that the leather bound drinks menu looks like a swashbuckler’s memoir. It took fifteen minutes to decide, but the lethal sounding Zombie ($17.50) captured my imagination. I had no idea it would arrive in a mug with a flaming passionfruit, but the pirate in me beamed with delight.
Food on the other hand, is delicate, almost feminine in design. The Spiced Beetroot Cupcakes ($10.50) laced with coriander pesto and topped with hazelnuts wouldn’t be out of place at the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
While the Beetroot and Goats Cheese Sandwich ($16.50) is a work of art; but with beetroot five ways, best make sure you’re a fan of the bloody vegetable.
Tempura Zucchini Flowers ($11.50), are not as aesthetically pleasing, but come stuffed with haloumi and are actually delicious.
The Chickpea Jenga Tower ($8.50) is fun, but you won’t spend time playing with them, they taste too good.
Chef Gerald Touchard’s favourite dish, the Rum Smoked Barramundi (24.50) has a sweetness and smokiness under its skin that hits you unaware – I actually summoned him from the kitchen to find out the secret – "rum, of course".
