Does My Bomb Look Big In This?

Event - The Victoria Room's 10th Birthday

Late last month I popped in to say Happy 10th Birthday to The Victoria Room. In a tight market like today, it's certainly a significant milestone! While I was there I even bumped into the resident Bar Fly, Rebecca Varidel - it seems she takes her work very seriously...

Being there for their birthday gave me pause to reflect - over a Mucho Margarita with a spicy chilli rim - on the multitude of visits I've made during the last decade. The most memorable cocktail I tried here was definitely The Australis - this creation by Simon Keene tasted like an Australian bush fire in a glass. I drank it in 2007 - back in the day when they had seventy-five cocktails on their list. It was enough to make you need a drink to sip on while you chose you drink...

As we dined on a menu of their classic dishes, including salt cod fritters, scallops with pea purée and an old favourite - goat's cheese balls with onion jam & truffle-infused honey - we were entertained by an array of talented performers. The standout was Matty Shields, a performer who fuses indigenous dance elements with beautiful pole work.

As you can see, The Victoria Room is still very much patronised by women. As I queued for a Gelato Messina fix on a recent Saturday, I was entertained by a parade of frocks and heels, as they joined a forty-plus person crowd itching for them to open at midday. Now there aren't many ten year old venues that can still command a queue like that...
