Golden milk first came to my attention when I was reviewing Saffron Only’s products; when I found out that Persian children drank it as a hot milk nightcap. After we got a bit addicted to adding threads of Iranian saffron to hot milk, we spent more time investigating recipes for this Persian nightcap. We eventually produced our own version of golden milk that combined saffron, fresh turmeric, ginger and honey. We threw in black pepper to increase our uptake of turmeric, a root embraced by Ayurveda (the Hindi medicinal tradition) for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Health claims aside, golden milk proved to be a popular evening drink, but our version was one we didn’t always have the time or energy to make at the end of the day.
Enter Arkadia Golden Latte [RRP: $6.99], a ready-made golden milk powder that’s easy to make into a hot or cold golden latte. It’s made from high quality turmeric, spices and organic panela sugar (unrefined cane sugar), and you can mix it with any milk you like, including soy milk.
For a person who generally frowns upon powdered ‘café-style’ products for the home, I’ve added this one to my weekly shopping list. My only gripe is it’s sweeter than the version we were making from scratch, but I’m weighing up a bit much sugar against not having orange fingers from grating fresh turmeric, and it’s winning. It’s an easy way to get more feel-good turmeric into your diet; on top of adding it to everyday things like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, curries and stir-fries. The drink’s complex earthy flavours are so satisfying and intriguing, they may even help you cut down on caffeinated beverages, particularly at night.
