You don’t even have to leave the Pacific Highway to find The Salty Dog Seafood Cafe and Gallery. It’s in Coolongoolook, which, at about three hours north of Sydney, is perfectly placed for a lunch pit stop on your way up the coast. I discovered it back in 2012, and it hasn’t let me down yet.
While the weekend menu is usually more exciting and extensive, on a rainy Wednesday morning they still managed to put out a chalkboard menu boasting four different local fishes – flathead, blackfish, mullet and whiting. We opted for the whiting in two different renditions.
Our meal began with a standard battered Whiting and Chips ($13.90), which impressed with a generous amount of crisp battered fish fillets, clean oil and decent chips.
Salt & Pepper Whiting Salad ($14.90) piled another generous serve of the same white flaky fish, cooked in a much lighter salt and pepper batter, on top of a springy, fresh mound of salad.
It came with aioli, though my dining companion added on chilli sauce. When teamed with a Fat Yak ($6) this fish salad made for a lovely, reasonably priced road trip lunch that didn't involve eating at a service station or fast food giant.
