Review - Big Rig Diner

Confession time: I got married in Vegas by ‘Elvis’ in a pink Cadillac. So, I got a bit misty-eyed walking into this great little space, decked out like a movie set small-town American diner, accurate down to the slightly bored waitress in denim cut-offs.

Charming head chef Zachary Sykes mans the grill with aplomb. Between burger flips, he coyly warns the Baja Dog ($9.50)is a messy one... it’s not a first date thing.”

When our (gluten free) spiced sausage sandwiched in a bun and overflowing with chilli con carne, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, cheese and chopped habaneros arrives, I have to agree. My only criticism would be the canned corn should be replaced with some of the... you know... fresh stuff, preferably barbecued?

To be honest, I am more about his Mum’s Macaroni and Cheese ($11.50) which was lightly spiced with a little tomato edge and some bacon. It is the ultimate drunk comfort food.

I'd also heartily recommend a side of Chilli Chips ($7.50) to get a taste of the ‘Famous Homemade Chilli’ with good quality ground beef.

Generous serves mean you will have to be hungry to fit in some Barbeque Pork Baby Back Ribs ($8/ 6) as well, but believe me, they’re tasty right down to the last lick.

Appropriate tunes, a fruity jug of White Sangria ($30) and a platter of sizzling beef Fajitas ($15) with a good selection of condiments make you want to sit a while...

...watching the door, waiting for The Man From Another Place to walk in. So expect a wait... I think it's worth it.

My dining companion and I remarked that seeing all our favourite vintage-wearing ladies like Tish, Elise and Madellen sitting at the counter in their retro-fabulous frocks would be jaw-dropping... think we can find six retro glam girls for an excursion?

This is more like the kind of things I love :) Just missed some sort of burger with blue cheese and side salad :)

The pork and chilli chips sound truly delicious :)

Re: Yum!
They had burgers too, but the place had been reviewed a few times by other Sydney press, so I tried to eat the less reviewed items...
