Ah the lure of new combinations and new flavours here is enough to refresh the most jaded of palates – check your cynicism at the door and dive into a great Chile Relleno ($14.90), a tuna-stuffed Guero chilli topped with a bittersweet tamarind sauce.
Owner Edgar Chavez’s recipe makes for excellent Lime Margaritas ($15); throw them back with Zucchini Flower and Tinga (pulled chicken in chipotle sauce) Quesadillas ($14.90).
Or you can try them with surprisingly light Mexican meatballs, Albondigas a La Mexicana ($12.90).
The party in my mouth makes me want to dance or shake maracas; luckily my Chicken Especial ($27) arrives. The well-cooked chook breast is stuffed with huitlacoche, a fungus that grows on ears of corn. It’s subtle and earthy, complimenting the surrounding chilli, parmesan, nutmeg and cream sauce.
Freshen up with an Ensalada Azteca ($14.90), a salad combining crispy tortilla strips and nopales (prickly pear cactus) in spicy honey vinaigrette – my only complaint is the use of canned corn.
You can also try cactus on the dessert menu in a delicious Prickly Pear Cake ($14) served up with coconut ice cream and a Mexican chocolate sauce. The cake is moist and pudding-like in texture from being soaked in a mixture of milks.
Book now, your palate will thank you! And if you're wondering, yes this is my second visit after less than a month! I am a confirmed Media Luna fan. You can see my first review of them HERE.
