Cider Tasting

For a bit of fun today we did a five cider tasting with a plate of French Toast with Caramelised Apples, Bacon and Maple Syrup for brunch. The five contenders vying for cider champion were:

Diamond White Cider - Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, 7.5%.
Tastes quite beery, rather pale, thin and lacking in the crisp apple flavour I enjoy. Really industrial, terrible.

Old Mout Scrumpy - Nelson, New Zealand, 8%.
Tastes wonderful! Refined and complex like a wine, without losing the apples. Family recipe, started in 1947, locally produced apples!

Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider - Nelson, New Zealand, 4.5%.
Tastes quite nice, lots of apple to it, not too much beer. Refreshing, but not stellar.

Old Mout Cidre - 4.5%, Nelson, New Zealand
Tastes so light and sparkly, lovely gentle cider, super easy to throw down, light green apple notes.

Sidra Escanciador - Spain, 5%
Tastes like it has 'the Spanish note' which is kind of a combination of olives/salt/kerosene. Hardest/most complex to drink, but quite unique, good apple flavour.

As suggested by the maker, we also tried both of the Old Mout ciders on ice, the Scrumpy really suited this, while the Cidre was perhaps a little watery taken this way.

Ranked in order of preference from left to right, the Old Mout Scrumpy has it!

Now to drizzle my maple syrup and devour my tasty breakfast... *hic*

Ciders purchased from Amato's Liquor Mart on Norton Street for the princely sum of $24.95 in total, making for an inexpensive and fun weekend brunch!

how lovely to live in a time of multiple ciders! i still remember when the only cider to be found in Sydney was of the Strongbow variety.

Excellent! I do love a good cider. I'll have to see if there are any bottle shops that are easier to get to from Marrickville. Then again, if it's good cider we're talking about, I think I can handle an extra bus ride...

Erm, any bottle shops THAT STOCK THEM, I meant.

Brain fail, and I've had coffee and everything!
