Review - The Royal Leichhardt

Why drive to Surry Hills when you can now have hipster pub pastiche right here in Leichhardt?

The W. Short Hotel Group (responsible for The Australian and The Glenmore in The Rocks) have made Leichhardt the latest recipient for one of those pub transformations that takes your local from an old men’s boozer and gambling den...

...to somewhere you can get a decent cocktail, craft beer and something culinarily more exciting than a ‘schnitty’ or ‘parmi’.

While these items remain on the menu, you’ll also find American comfort food, from Hot Wings ($17.50) to...

...that clever Grilled Watermelon Salad ($15.90) I fell in love with at the Keystone Group pubs.

These days, The Royal’s upper level is known as Botanical. It’s full of the usual clichés: exposed hipster light bulbs, wooden taxidermy replicas (that’s fake deer heads to you and I), and...

...a living garden wall that makes their ‘outdoor’ smoking space so cool, even I wanted to dine in it.

Throw in district views, and a well-priced cocktail list that doesn’t ignore the area’s Italianate influence (the Ginger Cat ($14) boasting Aperol and Appleton Rum, and the Garden Party ($13) combining Tanqueray Gin, Vermouth and Campari were my favourites), and you have one standout next generation hotel!
