I don't have to be asked twice to make a return visit to The Owl House. Plus, knowing how busy October was going to be, what with a host of food events on every single day, I felt lucky to get in early with a sneaky menu preview of their October promotion - Our State on a Plate. The idea for this three-course menu arose during some NSW producer visits Chef Roy Ner and owner Amir Halpert made together sourcing ingredients for the restaurant.
Each pair of diners gets treated to three platters of food, and six drinks for the sum total of $65. While the menu has developed since my visit, I can tell you that my favourite part of the entree platter was Roy's duck and foie gras roulade. By matching each platter to two different drinks, Amir and Roy offer you a food-matching playground which is sure to have you both debating which platter item works best with beer, wine and cocktails.
On the main platter, Roy's capsicum stuffed with lamb mince in Lebanese seven spice was home-style cooking to him, but pretty exciting to someone like me whose family home rarely produced anything quite that tasty.
Roy also draws upon the Middle East for dessert with a platter that includes sahlab with saffron fairy floss, and deep fried halva ice cream.
Now there are still a good ten days left of October for you to make time to pop in and try this decadent platter based experience for yourselves. Even without trying the finished version (you get a peek in the picture above, complete with a specially brewed Owl House Big Hitter from their visit to Morpeth Brewery) I highly recommend it.
