The Pub Princess' 'Straya Day Pub Roundup

This morning on 2GB Fresh! I gave a roundup of pubs you might like to head to today for some Australia Day festivities...

My favourite of the Drink'n'Dine group, The Norfolk will be doing $20 buckets of VB (5 tinnies), $5 Green & Gold shots (tequila & green sangrita – a great chaser that makes even the most rugged tequila go down smooth), $20 Pavlova jugs (it’s a cocktail) and kangaroo tacos… plus free zinc in the beer garden so if the sun chooses to come out, you won’t burn your nose.

My favourite local, The Welcome Hotel, is kicking off at 11am with a gourmet 'snag off, a thong throwing comp & Mountain Goat Beer for all. In their usual tradition of supporting both craft beer and top-notch nosh you can expect a gourmet snag-off and a winner takes all thong-throwing competition.  You win, you get a slab of Mountain Goat Beer to walk out with… I hear chef Daniel Mulligan has been tinkering with three gourmet snags for weeks, but now he needs your help – the one punters crown the winner will end up on The Welcome Hotel bar menu.

If you’re heading down to The Rocks to check out the Ferrython, The W. Short Hotel Group have two venues: The Australian Heritage Hotel will of course be the place to celebrate all things traditionally Aussie over the long weekend with over 130 Aussie beers, a special Australia Day menu including their famous pizzas (anyone for eating the Coat Of Arms on a pizza?) and live entertainment. While up the road at The Glenmore’s iconic rooftop bar, the beers will be flowing from 10am on Sunday 26 January with tunes from another “unnamed” radio station followed by a DJ, with the pub’s mouth-watering food menu will also be available all day.

The Union Hotel (who have a great fine-diner Uncorked as well) are doing Aussie beef pies with mash, gravy & a schooner of Tooheys for $10.

At The Royal in Leichhardt, Aussie beers, tunes and a special mixed grill will be the order of the day on Sunday 26th, bringing some traditional Aussie style to Sydney’s ‘Little Italy’.

Now if you’re bringing a family, Bungalow 8 have dialed up the activities this year, with jumping castles and painting for the kids while adults can get involved in the dunking tank, pie-eating contest and the all- Aussie thong-throwing competition! An acoustic set by Duan And Only will provide a relaxed vibe during the day and will move into party beats in the evening provided by the likes of Turbo, Micky D and Danny Simms to keep the party pumping until early morning.

Also in the kid-friendly department Australia Day 2014 at The Henson (my favourite pub of last year) will include free face painting & activity packs for the kids! The Yard Bar will be serving up fresh juice for the kids and spiked juice for the big kids from 11am

The Ivanhoe have gone upmarket with a $98 seafood platter than even includes a bottle of wine – hard to resist with DJs like Kane Kirby in the beer garden with a live band – the Paul Wing Trio from 5.30pm. Sounds tres civilised and only a hop, skip & a jump from the beach if the pesky weather would just cooperate.

And last but not least, if you’re heading down to YABUN Festival 2014, a celebration of Australia’s indigenous culture running from 10-6pm in Victoria Park, just down the road you might want to team it with a visit to the Harold Park Hotel. William Ryan tells me they are throwing a beach party with a free sausage sizzle, cool music, hot cricket and loads of fun...

So grab some mates, have some fun, but remember: friends don't let friends wear the Australian flag as a cape.
