This Week's Food News - Sweet Street

DJ Hookie sank his hooks into some sweet stuff last month...

Anyone who’s known me longer than a DJ set will be aware that I’m not typically the dessert type; but who am I to pass up the opportunity to attend Anna Polyviou’s increasingly popular Sweet Street sugar festival? Some of Australia’s evilest of geniuses get together once a year to create and collaborate over some of the world’s most intense cakes and pastries. Inside, amidst the purple disco lights, Yo! Mafia drops anything from driving house to Lady Gaga remixes, in her ‘borderline-festival-ready’ DJ booth – to get us in the mood for some sugary action. Save for the cakes and irritating media types, we may as well be in a nightclub. Upon entering, my eyes are drawn to the ridiculously opulent cake, designed by soon-to-be-ex-Hartsyard pastry chef Andy Bowdy. Well played Mr. Bowdy, and best of luck with your future online cake empire. With little hesitation I seize the opportunity to steal a mouth watering Chouxmamca by Adriano Zumbo, and a Pipa from Katherine Sabbath, before heading to the Black Star (vs?) N2 Extreme Gelato stand. The liquid nitrogen billows from the ice cream machines like misty fog undulating from the Bangkok airport smoking lounge. The collaboration sees N2’s take on Anna Polyviou’s famous carrot cake, complete with gelatinous filled flavour syringe. Not bad!
